An often-overlooked district in southern Spain, north of Malaga and Nerja. Our trip
4/20/2003 - Drove back roads from Frigiliana over the ridge to Lake Vinuela, through spectacular mountain scenery
Driving through Axarquia
Our route took us through or past several white villages - Competa, Archez, Sedella, Salares, Aceituno...

Competa is about the same size as Frigiliana - maybe 2000 year-round residents.

The Sierra de Tejeda national park and nature reserve covers a lot of the west side of the range.

Sedella is not very big, but is the main town in the valley with the nature reserve.

The goats we encountered were all over the main road down the mountain, surrounding our car.

Lake Vinuela can just be glimpsed from Canillas de Aceituno. Or maybe this is the town of Vinuela. Whatever.
Lake Vinuela - first glimpse
Our goal for the day was to get to Lake Vinuela.
Lake Vinuela - closer
And here we are - Lake Vinuela. It's a relatively new, manmade reservoir, surprisingly undeveloped so far. That won't last.
